STATE AND DISTRICT CAASPP TEST RESULTS RELEASED

Last spring, Laguna Beach Unified School District students in grades 3-8 and 11 participated in the 2015 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), the new computer-based tests for English language arts/literacy and mathematics. These new exams are part of California’s comprehensive plan for supporting high-quality learning at every school. They are based on California’s new, more challenging academic standards, which are designed to help all students graduate ready for college and to pursue a career.

According to the California Department of Education, these new tests are much too different from the old exams to make any comparisons between old scores and new, just like the new learning goals they were designed to measure. This year’s scores are better thought of as a starting point, a baseline for the progress students are expected to make over time.

On September 9, 2015, each school district’s CAASPP results were released to the public, along with state-wide results. LBUSD’s results were highly ranked within Orange County. At Laguna Beach High School, 83% of 11th graders either met or exceeded the English Language Arts/Literacy standards, which ranks LBHS as having the highest 11th grade percentage in Orange County. Additionally, LBUSD ranks second in Orange County for overall percentage of students meeting or exceeding the standards.

Individual student score reports will be mailed to parents by the end of September or early October. The score reports contain an overall score for each subject as well as information about performance in different skill areas associated with English language arts/literacy and mathematics. “Our goal this year is to use these reports as one of the multiple measures available to teachers and parents to help determine future areas of need and assist in differentiating our instruction to meet the diverse needs of all students in Laguna Beach Unified,” said Amy Kernan, Coordinator of Assessment, Accountability and Special Projects for LBUSD.
